When production started in 1948, there was only one model, the H, with a payload of 1200Kg and a 35hp version of the 1911cc Traction engine, albeit rotating in the opposite direction.

For the 1949 model year, the HZ was offered with the same engine but higher gearing and a reduced payload of 850kg.

For 1959, the H became the HY, with payload increased to 1500kg

From 1961, diesel became available in the shape of the Perkins 4.99 unit, resulting in two new model designations, the HY DI and HZ DI

In 1963 the original 1911 engine was withdrawn, to be replaced by a 45hp 1628 cc unit with an alloy head, derived from the DS.

Accordingly, petrol model designations changed to HY 72 and HZ 72  (the 72 comes from the cylinder bore, 72mm). A suite of other changes were made at the same time, including the switch to 12 volt electrics.

In 1964, the Perkins diesel was replaced by a 1810cc Indenor unit with 50hp. This led to a change of designation in 1965 when the HY DI and HZ DI became HY IN & HZ IN.

In 1966, the 1911cc engine was reintroduced, again with an alloy head and now with a maximum power output of 48hp.

At this point, the models available were:

HY 72 payload 1500kg
HY 78 payload 1500kg
HY IN payload 1500kg
HZ 72 payload 850kg
HZ 78 payload 850kg
HZ IN payload 850kg

In October 1968 there was a re-vamp of the range. In particular, the 1911cc engine’s power was boosted to 58hp. The diesels were also updated with an increase in bore from 85mm to 88mm to give 57.5hp, but an increase in fiscal rating from 7 to 8 CV, hence higher road tax.

Payloads were increased across the board, even though the 1628cc engine was unchanged. There was a change to the rear brakes though, which perhaps justified the additional load rating.
