Thanks for asking Paul and for also your enquiries to other members.
I went to view the members car that was listed in the Citronean recently for £60k at Bonhams in Abingdon. A lot of money had been spent on cosmetics, but the car had had very little use in the previous 20 years and a conversation with the owner wasn’t particularly reassuring. I did bid in the auction and it eventually sold for £17.8k inclusive of buyers fees. It is now advertised via a dealer for a very optimistic £35k.
I was far more excited by Sir James Dyson’s SM also advertsied via auction. I bid to £28k and it sold for £29k. Much money spent in the right areas mechanically, rust appearing on the body, but I was smitten. I’m a bit more enthused by an SM at the moment which means I’m fishing in a small pool and probably inviting a world of pain. I spotted the brown members car at ACA in Norfolk (couldn’t live with brown as a child of the ’70’s) and the black DS23 close to me in Malvern adverted online, but not sufficiently exitied to go an enquire.
Thanks Paul, I’d appreciate that.
The gentleman you mention don’t appear to have much web presence that I can see although I’m not on Facebook/Twitter/Insta etc.
I guess they’re members rather than garages.
Thank you.
Servicing and repairs are an issue – I’m close to Ross on Wye and so striking distance for Cardiff, Bristol, Gloucester and Birmingham. I used to take the CX to Tony Weston south of Gloucester but he hasn’t posted anything for two years via his only online media. There was a Citroen specialist in Redland, Bristol who I think may now have closed.
Sparrow Engineering in Hereford are v close, but I understand really a 2cv guy.
Anyone know of someone this side of the country?
Thanks, that’s interesting to hear. I gather Jamie and Darrin are very busy and may potentially be fully booked months in advance. Don’t know who Adie is?
Expanding the search to include SM – I may have lost my mind.
Yes, that’s the one. A fortune spent on paint but otherwise barely used in the last 20 years and so the mechanical picture was sketchier.
I think some of the speculators and investors are less interested post CV19 and given the cost of living situation etc. which has brought the market back to reality and now that some of the hot air has gone, returned to enthusiasts rather than investors (hopefully).
Quite a few of the auction houses have struggled to shift half of their offered lots this year too, which may means the indescriminate purchasers may have moved on.
The DS21 advertised in this month Citroenean for £60k sold for £16.5k at auction today plus fees = £17.8k Something is going on with classic car prices.
Good shout, thanks Peter.
Thanks Paul. I’ve only just rejoined the club and so not had a new Citroenean yet, but spoken with the owner of a DS23 recently advertised in it today.
The very expensive cars seem to hang around for months and sometimes years. There must be a market for them particularly over lockdown, but the old car market has softened considerably since then.
I’m in no rush and believe that serendipity will hopefully assist in uniting me with the right car at a sensible price.
Or I may be deluded. -
