Okay. This is what I’m told:

“All registrations are done by ANTS dept, you need a ‘carte gris’ if it’s a french car, UK cars need V5c, mot cert and a COC cert. And a purchase invoice older than 6 months Plus import cert stamped at customs and French insurance.

If you import a car you pay 10% tax then vat 20% so 32% on whatever is the French book price, They decide – the office not you. Then you have to get a French CT. Only a French resident can do the processing as you need access to gov websites and accounts etc.”

My friend also added that if you are emigrating to France, it sounds as though you don’t have to pay the 32%, as you are allowed to bring personal possessions when you emigrate along with your visa and a certified shipping list which includes you cars which all gets processed at customs when you enter France.

Many thanks for the information Paul

I spoke to my friend. He has replied:

“You can only register a car in France if you are a resident in France, 2nd homeowners cannot. They wouldn’t be able to insure it either.

People do it illegally but if you have an accident the insurance will not pay out and you will get taken to court and the car impounded, so a high risk action.”

Putting all of this aside, any process must surely be through the French government infrastructure, though DVLA might be able to advise from the point of view of ‘un-registering’.

    Thanks Paul

My French wife is resident in France so we might register the car in her name but we do not know how to do this. Where do we start?
