If someone can provide a sample or drawing we could make a few (in brass?) Do they fit anything else?

in reply to: HP pipe seals #6860

Well, of the 3 pestilence: rattles, rust and leaks, the last appears to be conquered for now at least. 2 weeks and no drips at all. Rattles should be reduced by new front anti-roll bar bushes (are these a breeze?) and rust will wait until winter now.

I think that this HP leak was due to poor seating after refitting as I had to bend the pipe back a little to clear the regulator and I expect it went back slightly skewed but initially closing OK with the new seal. A bit of shaking then caused looseness which is now tightened.

The brass insert is working well and reading a fairly constant 75deg.C and no leaks so far. Took the opportunity to flush and refresh the coolant.

Not sure that I would want to drill n tap the water pump blank in situ – too much to get in the way.

Interesting fact: my temp sender has the same thread as HY wheel studs – M16x1.5😀

in reply to: A Few Cable Ties and Farmer’s rubbish #6838

Looked up the optional temp gauge and found the blanking plug below the water pump and the slot on the dash. So forget the dash slot and use a digital display (risk of heartburn for the purists). How easy could it be? Just drill and tap the blanking plug for a temp sensor and wire it up.

Socket on the blank, then with extension tube – bent the ratchet!! That plug isn’t going to move at all, or else something will crack.
Plan B – made a brass holder for the sensor and stuck it in the bypass hose.
Pics show the machined bits, then fitted and reading. Just need to find somewhere for the display.

in reply to: Self levelling system #6798

Our LHD car had fixed RHD lights fitted by the previous owner so the levelling kit was redundant and I removed it.

I left all the front parts (crossbeam, bellows, lamp rotators etc) on Matthew’s bench at Citroen Classics a couple of weeks ago if you need anything.

Set our pre-Kickstart youngster off with new balls and grinding instructions and he has done a nice job. Ends were extremely hard so should last a few more years. All back now and I think a quieter run.

Kickstart gives youngsters 6 months of employment on Rishi’s dime – no apprenticeships around here for talented individuals.

Now sorting the rear suspension – worn pushrods. Unfortunately replacements not currently available so will re-grind the ball faces smooth. Should last a year or two. Found a use for those carpet off cuts:

No issue with the change – already done. Just puzzled by the undocumented variants.

We have CNC turning and milling facilities and 3D printers as well as the usual manual mills an lathes. Our bits will keep HY wheels turning😃

    See Pewsey Precision!

Well I don’t mind keeping Darrin in business. We are about to make some HY parts for him😀

in reply to: Wheel Colours #6690

At the risk of pouring petrol on the tyre fire, checked the tyres last week: Kleber Alpines(?) -195×15’s all round. Absolutely pristine tread including moulding bobbles but evidence of wall cracking. Checked dates – 4705 so v old!

Just changed them at Vintage Tyres at Beaulieu for 185 Dunlop Sport Classics all round and stuck the best Kleber as spare – 195×15 ‘just’ fits under the bonnet!

Did tube them for the no-bead reason given above; balance weights inside.

No idea what colour the rims are; all I know is we have lower risk and a much smoother ride on soft rubber rather than 15 year old concrete hoops but a slimmer wallet!

When you had the wheels off was it fairly easy to rotate the drive shafts (difficult to judge though)?

I wonder if the squeaking is from a pad stuck in the callipers? It could we worth poking the pads with something to see if they are loose in the calliper and can be pushed back a little from the discs.

I did find mouse nests in the air intakes but the mice had stopped squeaking a long time ago. Citröen had thoughtfully put an insect screen in the air duct so the mice did not get behind the dash.

Fluids all done and we are already in kM as we are LHD. Plan is to swing by Paris on the way back to visit Quai Andrė Citröen and spin round Etoile a few times if we survive. I worked in Paris for a while on the other side and never realised that the old factory was so close the the centre.

I get my carp from the local monks. Even with axle stands I push a wheel under the side of the car as insurance. Stops me tripping over it too😀

in reply to: Another Mystery Part #6587

    Peter,

Thanks for confirmation re valve seats. Car pulls to 80-100Km/h no problem at all on the flat and feels like there’s more to come though the 4th gear whine becomes noticeable. Given the car is a relatively unknown quantity and we have planned a 1400 mile FR trip in September I don’t want to break something by thrashing what is an old car. So far we run about in it several times a week and are just waiting for the current unpleasantness to subside and allow a decent UK run somewhere.

The list of things to do grows weekly of course but unless they are critical we intend to run it as it is.
