I have just had two new wheels enamelled and fitted them to the front. They are not vibrating but thought that I should get them checked. Is this right?

Thanks vey much Paul. I bought a full set of Michelins for my D Super fridge m Longstone about 5 years agi. They probably have a record of my purchase so may be happy help me.

Thanks as always for your rapid response. I guess it is OK to drive the car with a couple of the fitted wheels unbalanced. I have driven the car at 30 mph for a few miles and cannot feel any vibrations.

Rather than create a new thread on travelling to France, I thought I would jump on this one. I am thinking of going to Paris next week in a D Super 1971. Low emission zones crossed my mind. Even if historic vehicles must comply surely any D is exempt, even if only informally?

Thanks very much Paul. Were you at the D rally? I was only here for a few hours on the Saturday. I was trying to look out for you. I am travelling to the south of France next month in my D Super so want to make sure I cover as many bases as possible as regards preventative maintenance. I will take the usual mandatory things (e.g. bulbs) but probably wise to take LHM, oil, fuses, I guess.

Interesting that it is because of the inner tubes that we can place the weights inside. This helps those concerned about the aesthetics of wheel colours (like me!), by having a nice clean colour, uninterrupted by weights, on the outside.

I am with you on not personifying cars Peter. Always sounds a bit odd to me, but each to their own. I am trying to get mine back to original colours and fittings though, so I labour over making the right choices. The look of the D is the thing that got me excited in the first place. It’s great to drive it as a normal car. So many people are just pleased to see it. That’s what gives me pleasure; even more than the driving.

Maybe I was lucky with mine being inside. Would you paint over the weights or keep them a metal colour?

The other thing I just noticed is the wheel balancing weights on the outside of one of your wheels. My wheels have them on the inside, so they do not spoil the look of the wheel. On cars with the bigger dishes maybe they do not show, but my D Super has the medium sized dishes.

Thanks Paul. It is very difficult to compare on a computer. The colours can look completely different in real life. I looked at a real swatch in the paint shop today and RAL7044 did look quite close to a grey (I believe gris roue) wheel that I picked up off eBay last year. By the way that rust effect that you have cultivated looks interesting, it might look good on the Decrap of Richard Edwards! 😉
