Din’t Jamie work at Citromobile – or ‘DSWorld’ as it became?

£4K wouldn’t have got you a lot at Citromobile! London market and prices. I had a test drive in a shabby white car they used as a run around. Very basic but enough to confirm i was hooked. i bought both of mine in private sales.

It’s definitely a case of ‘buyer beware” I’m afraid. As a past owner, do you know the main things to look at to get half an idea of whether the car is sound?

Well spotted! Have you seen that documentary about the Citroen factory – “Humain Trop Humain”? No Ds featured in production, but a fascinating peak at the production process of mid 70s cars. Available as six short segments on Youtube.

    Hi Justin
It sounds as though your preference or need is to buy a tidy car that you can jump in and enjoy – rather than a wreck to restore. Asking prices have gone up a LOT since the 90s and more and more cars are being restored from rust buckets – some very well, some not so. The days of finding an original car in good condition AND at a reasonable price are not entirely over, but are dwindling. The cars sold through the Club are, all too often, cars bought at a high price and now offered for sale at an even higher price.

I have seen some good looking cars that fit your bill (well maintained) go for ridiculously low prices at auction compared to what is asked elsewhere – £7k, £8k. So consider that. The trouble is that even a car ‘well maintained’ on a daily basis, could be secretly suffering from severe corrosion in the chassis and roof. There is also a trickle of RHD cars coming in from South Africa. These may have a few oddities in terms of fittings, but can be cost effective way of finding a tidy car – once all the paperwork is done.

Catch it while you can. Never let anyone (anyone) tell you their DS is “totally rust-free”. It just means they’re not looking hard or critically enough.

Once you get past this job Peter, you can go back to ‘Plan A’. Is the area covered in your photos the only one you need to deal with or have you discovered similar rust elsewhere?
