Something scary: wiring loom on my 1968 car. The looms are notorious for rot. Someone told me at the GS/A rally this weekend that changing the loom on such a car can add £1000 to the value!

There will be a link to a ‘classified ads’ area on this site. Though if you follow the link through the ‘members’ area at the top of the page, it’s not built yet.Instead, the advice there is to put your ‘want’ in the Citroenian – the physical glossy mag.

In the short term, i reckon the D forum is better than the online classified ad thing (due to limited use of the Forums) and that the Citroenian would get better readership/ exposure than both. Even better though (for a quicker response etc), would be the D Section page on Facebook.

It’s telling that Citroen Classics use bonding AND rivets. If you do go for the double sided tape option, it is the back end of the rear wings that will be most troublesome because of their curve, and that is where the rivets are probably used.

The original fixing along most/ all lengths is neither glue nor rivets – but bolts. Actually short lengths of threaded rod welded or braised to a very thin ‘cap’ instead ion a hex.

You won’t be alone in having four 185s. Pretty common – if not very common. You may need to adjust the bracket that holds the big stainless steel bolt for the rear wings. The one above the rear reflector. What you might need to do is ‘pull’ the back end of the wings out a little to create room for the 185s on the back.

Richard. Did you see on the tyre thread that someone with an owners handbook in English said that his 1973 car has 180 size tyres on all four corners and that 155s (or 165s) on the rear were a French market option. I suspect that Citroen m`naual 814 – being an English translation of French manual 583 – simply replicated the tyre sizes for French domestic market cars.

There is another recent thread on here started by Justin Riley.The thread just before yours. He was after confirmation of tyre sizes for his 1975 DS20. The conclusion reached was that originally it would have had 180s on the front and 155s on the back. Partly because of cost, and availability, lots of people go for 185s on the front and 165s on the back.If you do really want 180s on the front (I do – for my 1968 car) then Michelin do make them.

Have you downloaded copies of the Citroen workshop manuals yet? Manuals 814 (2 volumes) covers maintenance and repair but also has various technical info. such as tyre sizes. In terms of parts manuals, a 1969 car is covered by manual 562 (two volumes but may be one pdf file), but it’s also worth downloading one of the later/ last parts manuals – manual 648. Have a look at this link:

There is a blue folder for ‘814’ and another blue folder for parts manuals.

Tyre sizes are on the tenth pdf page of volume 1 of 814. You car was coded as a ‘DL’ vehicle by Citroen and the table shows fora 1969 car, 180s on the front and 155s on the back.

I’m not very good with facebook either! The Citroen Car Club has a group/ page on Facebook and there is also a Group/ Page for the ‘D Section’ (of the Citroen Car Club). It’s called ‘Citroen car Club D Section” and you should be able to search for that within facebook. It’s a private, members only, group. So you need to send a message to the administrator to ask to join. tell them you are a CCC memberand give them your membership number. If it’s easier, i can ask Geoff whether he can give me his number to pass on to you?

Hi Richard. Congratulations and welcome. My first Ds was a 1969 car – an ID19 to be exact. The D section very recently announced a technical weekend, though because of COVID places are limited. It’s this coming weekend. Not sure where! Have you got the very latest Citroenian magazine – it’s advertised in there. If not call John and Judith Gagen on 01284 827039.

Tyres: You can get Michelins – but very expensive. There is a budget (still not cheap!) tyre for the DS. Might be called ‘Retro’ brand? Longstone Tyres are the experts for tyres for all classics and sell tyres to many Ds owners. Equally try one of the DS suppliers such as ‘Citroen Classics’ They are based down near staines on the edge of London.

This site isn’t really the best market place for parts. There are a number of established DS specialists in the UK. Ones that come to mins are Citroen Classics, Pallas Auto, DS Workshop, Peacock Engineering. And several on the Continent: Der franzose, Sassens, Citroends. Some of these have better developed online shopping facilities than others.

If you are down Gower way, maybe make contact with Geoff Rothon whois down South Wales way. He’s in the Club and has previously owned Ds. May still own one. Knows how to fix them. He’s a former owner of my DS. He may also be able to advise of a parts supplier more local to you. You can probably reach Geoff through the ‘Section’ facebook group.
